The 'Maritime Magic Man' Gillies Barrieau swept the two-year-old pacing divisions of the Maritime Breeders Stakes on Sunday afternoon at Truro Raceway, scoring wins with his trainee Howmacscanasta and Jackson K Down for the Stephen Mason stable.

Howmacscanasta overtook Brookdale Liz after the first quarter and then held off Howmacsfiesty to win the $32,200 Maritime Breeders Stakes for two-year-old pacing fillies by half a length in 2:00.1. West River Ambyr finished third.

The Articulator-Stonebridge Capri filly now boasts five wins in 11 starts and earnings totalling $41,212 for owners Wayne MacRae of Fall River, N.S. and Robert Tilley and Lester Mott, both of Saint John, N.B.

In the $31,400 Maritime Breeders Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts, Barrieau sent Jackson K Down to the lead after the opening quarter and cruised home to a two-length victory in 1:58.3 ahead of Brandons Glory and Howmacsblackjack.

Jackson K Down improved his record to 11 wins in 12 starts. The homebred Camystic-Village Jericho gelding, who has amassed $56,234 in purse earnings with his near-perfect freshman campaign, is owned by the Downey Stables of Quispamsis, N.B.

Glencove Zani added another stakes victory to his resume as he captured the $8,900 Maritime Breeders Stakes for two-year-old trotters. The 2:05.1 victory was his fourth (consecutive) and fastest yet from 10 starts for owner/trainer Edward Smallwood of Stratford, P.E.I.

Lenny McGuigan sent the Bo W gelding wire-to-wire from the inside post position while turning back a challenge from Howmac Gypsy into the stretch and holding off Craigh Na Dun by three-quarters of a length. Mr Bower finished third.

On the undercard, sophomore pacer Chief Exec Officer won the $1,375 Winners Over Pace in 1:59.2 over Gerries Beach and Prince Adam. Emmons Ralph Mackay drives and co-owns the winner while Tammy Lynn Mackay handles the training duties.

Trainer George Rennison sent out four winners from his stable during the 13-race program and now boasts a career-high 35 wins on the year. Paul Langille drove Elloll Hanover, Our Star and Rambling Gambler while Ryan Ellis was aboard Electric Syl for Rennison.
