Monticello Raceway Director of Racing Eric Warner has commented on the horse shortage which has forced the New York State track to cancel its card of live racing which had been scheduled for this Friday (February 2).

In speaking with the Times Herald-Record, Warner has said the amount of horses that are currently in the position to race is not enough to fill all of the cards that are currently being offered in the state.

“It’s (the horse shortage is) industry-wide at this point,” Warner was quoted as saying. “We try to race more times during the winter because other tracks are closed and we generally have more horse population to race, but at this point we didn’t have enough to go five days (a week). …It is disappointing.”

Buffalo Raceway COO Jim Mango has also commented in the story. His track recently announced that it had been forced to cancel three upcoming live cards due to the issue in the local racing population.

In the article, Mango says that there isn’t a horse shortage, but that there is currently too much racing in the state, and that it is the amount of race dates that needs to be reduced.
