Alcarine and Tryst pulled off upset victories in their respective big money events on Thursday evening at the Meadowlands, which featured the $58,000 final of the Super Bowl and the $43,500 final of the White Ruffles
.
Alcarine erupted for a 17-1 shocker in the Super Bowl for trainer/driver Daryl Bier. The four-year-old daughter of Revenue S, who had a win and a second-place finish in the preliminary legs of the series, used a :28.3 final frame to sweep by the leaders en route to posting the one-length score in 1:55.1. Willie Count was next best, with race favourite Dolce Ducci taking home the show dough.
"I just wanted to fall somewhere in mid-pack," Bier said. "I knew I had to beat Andy [Miller and Dolce Ducci] and Brian [Sears and Zeitgeist], but I thought if I could get away mid-pack and pick up a little cover, we'd be right there. It worked out very well.
"The second time I raced her, there was a horse out there who was parked and I didn't really want to go three-wide with her," Bier added. "She probably should have won that race. I told everyone in Delaware to bet on her tonight. I'm trying to get the handle up here. We're trying to help the Meadowlands. I love this place and I'd hate to see it go."
Nicholas Cimino of Pompano Beach, FL owns the six-time winner who boosted her lifetime earnings to $64,527 with the victory.
Tryst was an upsetter to the tune of 5-1 in the White Ruffles thanks in large part to a sweet trip worked out by driver Andy Miller. Tryst tracked cover from second over before using a :27.1 final frame to catapult her way to a neck decision over Summer Snow in a stakes record clocking of 1:52.4. Fax Me finished third.
"I was just trying to get a live trip," Miller said. "I saw Brandon [Simpson and Fax Me] leaving out of there and decided to follow him. I was surprised to see Summer Snow [coming at us on the outside]. [Summer Snow] was rough-gaited last week but put in a good effort tonight. I was happy to get the drive back on Tryst tonight. She marched right down to the wire."
Alexander Rice, Jr. of Townsend, DE owns and Bob Rice trains the four-year-old daughter of The Panderosa, who improved her 2011 record to 3-1-0 in four starts. The mare has banked $73,319 to date.
