The final statistics are in and the 2011 track title holders across the country have been determined
. Trot Insider has compiled a list the 2011 leading trainers and drivers in Canada.
World driving champion Jody Jamieson enjoyed an incredible year on the Canadian harness racing scene to earn the title as top money earning driver of 2011. Victories in multiple stakes events including the nation’s richest harness racing event, the $1.5 million North America Cup, with his father’s trainee Up The Credit helped boost his purse earnings to $10,556,255. Among his other big money stakes wins were the Upper Canada Cup with Mystician, a pair of Ontario Sires Stakes Super Finals with Mister Herbie and Warrawee Needy, and two Breeders Crown championships with Frenchfrysnvinegar and Monkey On My Wheel.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old reinsman Scott Zeron topped the charts in the win column for the second straight year. He earned 538 victories in his cross-country endeavours including the Battle of Waterloo with Machapelo and a pair of Ontario Sires Super Finals with Apogee Hanover and Miss Paris.
Despite being sidelined with racing and training injuries for the final months of 2011, Gilles Barrieau was the leading percentage winning driver of the year with an average of .464. The Maritime horseman reached the winner’s circle 133 times in 452 starts. Among the stakes winners he drove were A As Glory, Charolettes Maggie, Diamond Coast, Dukes Up, and Obamanator.
Jeff Gillis cemented his place atop the Canadian trainers standings for earnings with a career-best $3,875,592 banked in purses. Gillis scored stakes victories with Apogee Hanover, Frenchfrysnvinegar, Mister Herbie, Mystician and Speed Again.
Rene Allard was the nation’s winningest trainer for the third straight year having sent out 265 winners in 991 Canadian starts from his stable. He was also the leading percentage trainer with an average of .393. Allard campaigned a consistent stable, which included Masters Stakes winner Strand Hanover.
