Appointees Wanted To Serve As Commissioners

The Ontario government is seeking interested candidates to serve as Commissioners on the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC).

“The ORC is embarking on this initiative to assist in the process of identifying suitable appointees,” said Rod Seiling, Chair of the ORC. “This is an excellent opportunity to serve the people of Ontario and contribute positively to the regulation of horse racing in this province.”

Qualifications include a sound knowledge of the industry, leadership experience in good governance, adjudication and strategic thinking as well as a personal reputation of integrity. Additional background, skills and time commitments required of appointees include:

Membership
The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints no fewer than three and no more than seven members and designates one member as chair and one as vice-chair. If the chair is absent or otherwise unable to act or if the office is vacant, the vice-chair shall act in the place of the chair.

Mandatory characteristics
Personal reputation for integrity; commitment to a successful racing industry in Ontario; willingness to prepare for, attend and actively participate in Board and related sessions; willingness to serve on an active committee or task force; willingness to participate in selected industry events.

Industry knowledge
Standardbred; Thoroughbred; Quarter Horse; racetrack operation; horse person (in racing context); breeder/owner; horse health/welfare; administrative law; Crown agency operation.

Board skills
Agency stewardship; audit/financial oversight; government relations; policy development; board-senior staff relations; ethics/integrity; group decision-making.

Geography
Eastern Ontario; Central Ontario; Southern and South Western Ontario; Northern Ontario.

Meetings
There are about 20 meetings per year. As well, commissioners are required to attend hearings from time to time. There are about 55-60 hearings per year which require a panel of one or more members. For more information, visit the Public Appointments Secretariat at: www.pas.gov.on.ca
